Chapter 1

Good morning Doctor Morgan.”

“Good morning, Sara,. How’s our mystery patient today?” asked Dr. Tom Morgan.

“He seems to be doing a lot better today. He has been more active this morning.”  the nurse said.

Dr. Morgan picked up the chart and took a look at the results of yesterday’s tests and was pleased at what he saw.  Then he glanced at the notes from the night shift nurse.

“Yes definitely, there is some real improvement here.  I wouldn’t be surprised to see  our Sleeping Beauty  wake up soon.  Sara, please keep an eye on him and let me know if he wakes up.   OK.?” the doctor asked.

“Sure doctor.” Sara said. “Did I see Sheriff Dillin stop by yesterday?  Has he found out anything yet?”

“No Sara, our friend here is still a mystery.  No one fitting our sleeping friend’s description has been reported missing.  Sheriff Dillin has even sent his prints to the FBI to see if they could get a match.  But no luck, so we just have to wait until he wakes up, and hope he can fill in the big mystery for us.”

“Well with a face like that, I can’t imagine him not being missed by someone.”  Sara sighed.

Dr Morgan smiled at Sara.  “Not you, too!  I think every nurse on this floor has a crush on our friend there.”

Nurse Sara just smiled and started to turn red.  A little embarrassed that her last comment slipped out without thinking.

Dr Morgan just laughed at her reaction, shaking his head, turned to leave.  “Check with you later.”

Sara finished taking her young patient’s vitals.  Making some final notes in his chart she  walked back to the head of the bed taking one last look at the monitors.  Seeing that everything was as it should be she looked down, smiled at him, then reached over and brushed his dark hair off his face.  Her hand lingered a little longer than was necessary.  She leaned a little closer, smiling and said softly “Hey Prince Charming.  It’s time to wake up.”

I don’t know how long I have been sleeping, but for some reason I couldn’t force myself to wake up.  I keep hearing voices.  Some seemed so far away and others quite close.  The words did not make any sense most of the time, but every once in a while something would come in clear.

One voice was definitely a male.  Strong and confident, always with a touch of concern.  This voice I started to like.  Then it started happening, his voice started coming in clearer.  A good morning,…...how are we doing…… is there any change….good night my friend.

There were also female voices, lots of them,  most of them sweet, always  cheerful     Hi cutie…. Morning  handsome……….sleep well Prince  Charming…..

But then there was that voice... the voice of the Wicked Witch of the West …..very cold, I didn’t like this voice, but thankfully it didn’t come around often.

And then there was the voice I liked the most,  always so kind,  full of joy, and sunshine. The voice of an angel.

“Good Morning Prince Charming.  How are we doing this morning?”

Yes, there she is, my angel.

“Oh my,  I see you had a good night.  The night nurse said you had a quiet night”

Nurse?  What nurse?  What is she talking about?

“Good morning, Doctor Morgan.”

Doctor Morgan?? Who is Doctor Morgan?  And why is he in my dream?

“Good morning Sara.  How’s our mystery patient today?”

Oh, I know that voice.  It’s him the one that makes me feel safe.
And what did he call her?  Sara,  my angel has a name…. Sara

“He seems to be doing a lot better today.  He has been more active this morning.”

Yes, angel Sara.  I am feeling better.  The headache is gone.

“Yes, definitely , there is some real improvement here.  I wouldn’t be surprised to see  our sleeping beauty  wake up soon.  Sara, please keep an eye on him and let me know if he wakes up.   OK.?”

Wake up?  I’m already awake, I think.

“Sure doctor.” Sara said.  “Has Sheriff Dillin heard anything yet?”

Sheriff!  I don’t like the sound of this.

“No Sara, our friend here is still a mystery.  No one fitting our sleeping friend’s description has been reported missing.  Sheriff Dillin has even sent his prints to the FBI to see if they could get a match.  But no luck, so we just have to wait until he wakes up, and hope he can fill in the big mystery for us

What are they talking about?

“Well with a face like that.  I can’t imagine him not being missed by someone.”

“Not you too!  I think every nurse on this floor has a crush on our friend there.”

Every nurse on the floor? ?  This is not making any sense at all.

“Check with your later.”

Hey, don’t leave.

What was that?  Some one touched my face.  Oh, I like the feel of that. Angel Sara, please touch my face again.

“Hey Prince Charming it’s time to wake up.”

Ok, Sara, I’m trying.  But it’s so hard.
Wait!   Don’t walk away!

Sara went out to the nurses, station and greeted head nurse Winters.

“Here is the chart for 211.  Dr. Morgan wants us to keep a close eye on him today.” said Sara.

“I don’t know why Dr. Morgan won’t send him to a nursing home.  He’s taking up a bed that could be used by someone else.  And costing this hospital money,  money that will never be paid back.”  nurse Winters said bitterly.

“I’m sure Dr. Morgan has his reasons.  I’m going to take my break now.   Keep an eye on him for me, please.”

“Oh all right, but don’t take all day I have schedules to get done this morning.”

Sara turned and headed to the break room and nurse Winters headed to room 211.

Foot steps, I hear Sara coming back.

Nurse Winters entered the room and looked down at the patient.

‘It took a lot of effort, but I finally was able to see some light.
There was someone standing next to me.  But all I could see was a shape.
Come on eyes, focus, let me see my angel Sara.
Slowly the dark shape started to come in to focus.
She is so,  so, ‘“ AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH”

Nurse Winters, noticed the young man starting to wake.  She took a step closer and bent down to say something, when his eyes opened, focused, grew big, and he started to scream   AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Startled by his reaction she too let out a scream.

As Sara entered the break room she saw Dr. Morgan, writing notes on some of his patients charts.  She poured herself a cup of coffee and joined the doctor at his table.

“I see it’s break time, Sara.  How’s our boy doing?”

“He’s doing fine.  Nurse Winters is with him while I take my break.  Do you really think he will wake….” Sara froze in mid sentence when she heard the screams.

Dr. Morgan and Sara both jumped up and ran out of the break room to see who was screaming.  Just as they got to the nurses station, a second scream was heard, coming from room 211.

“Dr. Morgan, with Sara right behind him, quickly enters the room.  They find Nurse Winters standing next to the bed, screaming down at the patient who is now wide awake and staring up at her.”
.
“That’s enough!!” the doctor shouted.  “What’s going on?”

Both screamers abruptly stopped their screams and turned to the two people who just entered the room.

“Oh doctor!  Good you’re here.  The patient was coming around when he opened his eyes and just started to scream.  I guess he startled me and I screamed.”  said a flustered nurse Winters.

“All right nurse, I’m here now.  Thank you”

“Well young man I’m glad to see you are finally awake.  My name is Dr. Tom Morgan.”

I know that voice, finally a face to go with the voice.

The doctor walked over to the bedside and looked down at the some what, frightened young man.  “How do you feel?”

I opened my mouth to answer but the only thing that came out was a hoarse squeak.  On the second attempt I managed to croak out “Dry…..water….please”

Sara quickly held a glass with a straw to the lips of the patient, allowing him a few swallows.

“Thank you” I said in a much more normal voice.

The doctor smiled at this then added “Well I bet you have some questions for us, but first.  Can you tell us your name?”

I smiled, and nodded saying, “My name is…………..”
What is my name?  I don’t know my name!  Why don’t I know my name.

The doctor saw the panic come across my face.  He reached out and put a hand on my shoulder then said. “You’re having some trouble remembering your name aren’t you?

I just sat there in shock and nodded my head.

“I feared this would happen, you had a nasty head injury.”  the doctor said.  “ Lets try a few simple tests.  What color is my coat?”

“White.” I answered.

“Good, now, who is the president of the United States?”

“Clinton,. . . .  he is still the president, isn’t he?”

“Yes, he still is.  Now when is your birthday?”

“I don’t know.”

“Ok,  what state is the city of Chicago in?”

“Illinois.”

“Fine, what year is it?”

“1996 I think.”

“Yes, it’s still 1996.  What is your parents’ names.”

“I,  I,  don’t know.”  I answered, now starting to get scared

“Your doing fine.  Now can you tell me what that is?” The doctor points to nurse Sara.

I look and smile and said “Oh, I know that…. That’s an angel,  a very pretty one dressed as a nurse.”

Sara smiled back at me and blushed a little.

“Yes, at least you have good eye sight.”  the doctor said with a little smile.  “It seems that you have partial amnesia. You seem to know general facts, but you can't remember anything personal.  We’ll set up some tests to see just how localized the amnesia is.  Now we need to give you a name.  Is there any name your are partial to?”

Frowning and thinking hard, I looked over to Sara and it came to me.  Feeling a bit naughty I looked Sara in the eye and said “Prince,  Prince Charming”

Sara’s eyes got big and she turned the brightest red I have ever seen in a person.

The doctor saw me grinning  at Sara’s reaction.  Clearing his throat to stifle a laugh, he caught my attention.

“Doctor does she always blush so easily?”  I asked.

“I’ve known Sara all of her life and she has been known to blush when she gets caught at something she not supposed to  do.”  the doctor said with a little smile, as he looked to Sara.

Sara turned even redder as she gave the doctor a look that could kill.

“Now,  I think a more serious name would be better.  We can’t have nurse Winters  think we have a dog in here, cam we.  A first name will be fine for now,  unless you’d like to be referred to as the patient.”

“Well I don’t know why but I like the name Marc,  spelled with a c.”

“Ok Marc with a ‘c’.  Is there going to be a last name to go with it?”

“Well maaybeeee,  How about Newman?  Yes, Marc Newman is my name.” I said with a smile.

“That’s a start, Marc Newman.”

“Doc, what is today’s date?”  I asked.

“It’s May 15 th. Why?”

“Well you can add May 15, 1996 as my birthday to my chart.  After all, today, Marc Newman was born here, at what  ever the name of this hospital is, in what ever town and state I’m in.”

“Well, Marc that is a start, and may I be the first to wish you  a happy birthday/”

“Thanks,  is there any chance I could get something to eat, I feel like I haven’t had any thing to eat in a week.  And this stuff dripping into my arm just isn’t filling.  After all, it IS my birthday, don’t I get cake and ice cream?”

“I think we can do something about that.  Sara, call down and order a tray for Marc.  Start him out on liquids and soft foods.  I think cake would be hard to handle right now, but I don’t see why you can’t have ice cream.”

Sara nodded and turned to leave.

“I will go make a few phone calls and set up some tests.  We should be able to get started after you’ve had a chance to eat.  See you in a bit Marc.” Dr. Morgan said and went out to the nurses station.

“Well, Sara, what do you think of Marc?”

“I like him, do you think the amnesia is permanent?”

“I don’t know, Sara.  We will know more after the tests.  But what I do know is, life on this floor is going to be more interesting.  I think he has taken a shine to you and I get the feeling his new task in life is going to see how many times a day he can make you blush.”

“Oh, dad, stop that.”
